SATYRICON Frontman Ordered To Pay $16,000 In Legal Fees After Losing Defamation Case
May 30, 2006According to Dagbladet.no, SATYRICON frontman Sigurd "Satyr" Wongraven has been ordered to pay 97,000 Norwegian kroner (approximately $16,000) in legal fees after his lawsuit against the VG newspaper was thrown out of court.
Wongraven filed a lawsuit against VG after the newspaper published a story suggesting that members of SATYRICON were charged with rape. The VG article was accompanied by a close-up photo of Wongraven, with a disclaimer that Wongraven had nothing to do with the incident.
SATYRICON's North American tour was cut short in December 2004 after session/hired guitarists Steinar Gundersen and Arnt Gronbech were charged with giving a fan a date-rape drug and sexually assaulting her in a tour bus following a Dec. 15, 2004 concert in Toronto. Wongraven claimed in his lawsuit that the VG article amounted to defamation, and demanded 40,000 NOK ($6,500) from the paper. However, he offered to settle the case for 10,000 NOK ($2,000). VG rejected the terms of the proposed settlement, and the case went to a civil court. The paper was initially found liable, but was cleared of any wrongdoing on appeal.
